Mozambique Whaleshark Expedition
Overview
This all-inclusive expedition is an ideal way to have a relaxing tropical holiday AND
get up close with the largest fish in the sea - the whale shark, rhincodon typus.
Growing to 18m (and averaging 9m in length),
these magnificent creatures pass through the warm Mozambiquan waters
on their annual migratory route,
forever in search of the plankton-rich waters on which they feed.
From Johannesburg airport we transfer to Barra where we
spend the next 9 days diving on the beautiful reefs and seeking out the
whale sharks. Often we may see them while diving, but also if we encounter
the sharks during a surface interval we will snorkel with them for as long as
they want to stay around us!
Optional extension
After spending 10 days in this paradise, we will either
transfer back to Johannesburg or, optionally to Shelley Beach in South Africa for
4 days of shark diving including an incredible tiger shark feeding dive.
Location
Our destination is Barra Reef in Mozambique which is one of Africa's
most beautiful and untouched diving wonders and exploring it during the
whale shark migration season is the ultimate in diving
adventures. Barra is set in miles of coconut plantations,
wide open beaches and turquoise water.
Barra Lodge is set in a huge coconut plantation
which gives the whole hotel complex a tropical island atmosphere. Our guide
owned the dive centre at Barra Lodge and discovered most of the reefs there - in fact,
lots of them still carry the names he gave them.
The bay is protected from the open ocean and even if the wind blows we can
still launch on most days.
