Malpelo Shark Expedition
Undoubtedly one of the most remote
diving destinations in the world, Malpelo island is widely recognised as
the finest place in the world to encounter large schools of hammerhead sharks in shallow water.
An endless inventory of seasonal "big fish" encounters await:
migratory pelagics such as whale sharks, oceanic manta rays, silky sharks,
galapagos sharks and dolphins visit the island - and, of course, all those
schooling hammerheads. The depths are also home to "El Monstruo" - the 4-metre-plus
smalltooth sandtiger sharks (Odontaspis Ferox) - their silhouettes often seen
against the sandy bottom at 60 metres.
The Location
Malpelo Island lies 310 miles off the western coast of Central America at one corner of the
'Golden Triangle' (with Cocos and the Galapagos islands). It is reached by sailing out of
David, Panama.
The expeditions are run from the 80-foot catamaran liveaboard, Inula.
The Malpelo National Park regulations only permit one dive boat to visit at any one time
so divers are guaranteed an exclusive experience.
S/Y Inula
Based in David, Panama, S/Y Inula and her skipper Arvid Martinkat is the only
diving vessel focusing on tours to Malpelo Island throughout the year.
Arvid uses his extensive knowledge of the area to ensure dives are conducted in
such a way to maximize client encounters without compromising safety.
Appropriately, our expeditions will only cater for small groups of up to 6 guests.
So whether it's drifting past schools of hammerheads along the walls
of 'El-Freezer' or hiding behind a boulder waiting for close-ups, this will definitely
be the dive trip of a lifetime.
